Al Gore backs the environmentally friendly .eco domain initiative. Al Gore backs the environmentally friendly .eco domain initiative.

A new green domain .eco has been endorsed by former US Vice President and environmental campaigner, Al Gore.

Dot Eco founded the campaign to create the unique domain which would be used by individuals and companies that support environmental concerns.

On 4 March, the company entered into a partnership with Al Gore and the Alliance for Climate Protection to secure and promote the .eco top-level domain.

.eco will be established as a way of expressing support for environmental causes as well as providing businesses opportunities to promote ecological initiatives. It will also allow environmental organisations to maintain their websites with a web address more in tune with their message.

Dot Eco will donate a majority of the profits from the .eco initiative to environmental charities and causes.

Al Gore said: “We fully support Dot Eco LLC in its efforts to secure the .eco top-level domain […] and look forward to working with Dot Eco LLC to promote .eco.

“This is a truly exciting opportunity for the environmental movement and for the internet as a whole.”

Cathy Zoi, CEO of the Alliance for Climate Protection, added: “The .eco initiative […] is a unique approach for fundraising for non-profit environmental organisations such as ours. We are thrilled to be working with Dot Eco LLC to generate funds for our organisation and to promote the awareness of climate change.”
