Conservative Chloe Smith wins by-election
27-year-old Conservative candidate Chloe Smith, wins by-election by strong margin.
Conservative candidate Chloe Smith has won the Norwich North by-election with 13,591 votes, more than double that of her closest rival, Labour candidate Chris Ostrowski, who received 6,243 votes.
Ms Smith, 27, will become the youngest MP in the House of Commons when she takes her seat after the summer recess.
Dr Ian Gibson, an apparently popular MP with constituents, resigned from the seat following the recent expenses scandal, after Labour’s so-called “star chamber” found him guilty of mis-claiming on his expenses – though he continues to deny the allegation. When the by-election was announced, BBC online reported that with a general election on the horizon, a lot rested on the outcome of this seat, as it is regarded as one of Labour’s strongholds. The Party had previously held a majority of 5,459.
Ms Smith paid tribute to her predecessor: “As a Conservative, I may not agree with Dr Gibson’s views on everything, but I am determined to represent the people of Norwich-North with the same honesty and conviction, and that is the approach I’ve taken throughout this by-election campaign.”
She went on to pledge just what the town can expect from her: “As your MP I will fight to protect local services, I will campaign for the northern distributor road. I will be a tireless champion for local people.”
Conservative Party leader, David Cameron praised Ms Smith for her historic win.
