The UK’s first open access fibre optic network has been previewed this week in Bournemouth, the first of its kind developed by Fibrecity, part of the i3 Group.

Formerly named H2O, the i3 Group began work on feeding fibre optic broadband throughout the sewer system of Bournemouth over a year ago – creating the UK’s first “Fibrecity”.

The company launched its self-service ‘shop window’ portal in the coastal town, which will eventually be available to anyone living in Fibrecities around the world.

It will enable people to easily and instantly select next generation services from a range of service and content providers, providing them with enhanced choice and the UK’s fastest broadband access of up to 100Mbps.

Unlike other networks, which are exclusively operated by individual service providers, Fibrecity has put in place the infrastructure, or technology platform that enables multiple service and content providers to market services offering true consumer choice.

i3 Group’s CEO, Elfed Thomas said: “The Fibrecity portal is a fully interactive way to access next generation services from service providers all over the world. When a home is connected to the Fibrecity network, the resident will be given a set top box and router that they can then just plug and play. What they will see on their TV or computer screen is a menu of the services available to them in their area from a variety of service providers.”

He continued: “Our view has always been to offer a true open access model; we have engaged with the market and our customers and are confident that this unique approach will deliver the very best fibre to the home experience throughout the world.”

Fibrecity network is aiming to support the following services (as new services are developed, new services will be added):

• Internet – super fast broadband of up to 100Mbps
• IPTV
• Existing standard TV and Satellite services
• Phone – Voice Over IP
• Healthcare
• Gaming
• Betting/gambling
• In the future: 3DTV, health monitoring etc

Delivery of Fibrecity Bournemouth is on target for completion in 2011. For more information, or to sign up if you live in Bournemouth, click here.
