Scientists have altered LS9 bug’s DNA
According to The Times, a new and exciting discovery has been made by LS9, one of several companies in Silicon Valley, situated in California. Scientists have genetically altered very small bugs that feed on agricultural waste, and excrete oil as a waste product, naming it ‘Oil 2.0.’ The LS9 bugs are single-cell organisms, each a fraction of a billionth the size of an ant.
Positive elements of the new ‘Oil 2.0’ result in a more environmentally friendly atmosphere, due to it being carbon-negative. It is also renewable petroleum that is interchangeable with oil.
Silicon Valley has previously worked on petrol-related projects and are aware of the huge problems occurring from the lack of oil. Greg Pal, Senior Director of LS9 Biofuels Company told The Times: “All of us here – everyone in this company and in this industry, are aware of the urgency.
“Ten years ago I could never have imagined I’d be doing this. Our plan is to have a demonstration-scale plant operational by 2010 and, in parallel, we’ll be working on the design and construction of a commercial-scale facility to open in 2011.”
Years ago such an experiment would not have been feasible and would have taken a very long time. However, new and expanding technology has helped produce a ground-breaking revelation.
If this discovery proves positive, it will definitely help with petrol shortage problems, occurring at an increasingly rapid pace around the world today.
