Sony is the latest electronics manufacturer to announce plans to launch 3D televisions to the consumer market.
Sony has announced plans for a June launch of its 3D televisions, in what some reports are calling a 3D consumer electronics battle as Samsung and Panasonic also vie for the winning title with their product launches.
Initially prioritising the Japanese market with the format, the technology giant says it will launch to the overseas market soon after.
In September 2009 when Sony first mooted its 3D range, Chief Executive Howard Stringer said that Sony was in a strong position to lead the technological revolution.
“Sony’s technological leadership, together with our ownership and unique understanding of all forms of content, means that we will be able to deliver the entire 3D value chain, both to our customers in the movie creation and distribution business and, of course, to consumers in cinemas, or at home on a variety of Sony devices.”
Samsung has already begun selling 3D TVs in South Korea and said it plans to roll them out globally this month with the aim of selling at least two million in 2010 alone.
Panasonic launches its own range in the United States tomorrow (10 March).
For consumers looking to buy into the format the price does not come cheap. According to reports when Sony’s 3D Bravia LCD TVs go on sale in Japan a 46-inch version is expected to sell for around 350,000 yen (£2,584), which will include two pairs of 3D glasses.
Sony also has plans to launch other 3D compatible consumer electronics products including 3D compatible Blue-ray disc players with built-in theatre systems, as well as plans for 3D compatible VAIO PCs and digital still cameras, all with launch dates in 2010.
Meanwhile Hollywood 3D blockbusters such as Avatar and the newly-released Alice in Wonderland are storming the box offices with record-breaking cinema takings.
The foreseeable future looks bright for 3D as further productions are in the offering, including James Cameron’s Titanic which he plans to convert to the format.
