London tube strike June 2009

10:35am GMT, Tuesday, 9 June 2009

A 48 hour London Tube strike will start 7pm Tuesday 9 June. A 48 hour London Tube strike will start 7pm Tuesday 9 June.

A 48-hour London tube strike is going ahead, commencing 18:59 Tuesday 9 June, which will leave many commuters and Londoners inconvenienced.

The Rail, Maritime & Transport Union (RMT) has called on its members to take part in the strike in protest of pay and planned redundancies.

Transport Commissioner Peter Hendy, disagreed with the strike action: “We utterly condemn the RMT leadership’s outrageous decision to continue to call for strike action, despite us providing assurances that we are doing everything possible to avoid compulsory redundancies and putting forward an improved two-year, above inflation pay offer.

“Their [the RMT] attitude is a slap in the face to all hardworking Londoners and businesses struggling through a deep recession. It will also disappoint the vast majority of Tube staff who do not want to take strike action, lose two days pay and disrupt London. Again, we urge the RMT leadership to get back to the negotiating table.”

The London Mayor and Transport for London (TfL) have introduced extra services to help cope with the demand for transport – these measures include more bus services, taxi-sharing at major railway stations, additional cycle parking and escorted commuter cycle rides, and a free river shuttle service.

The strike will end at 18:59 Thursday 11 June. Normal service is expected to resume the following morning.

For information about extra services, visit the TfL website.
