Microsoft unveils cloud computing service, Windows Azure
Microsoft will soon launch Windows Azure
Microsoft has announced its new cloud computing platform, Windows Azure, allowing data and applications to be saved in a virtual storeroom.
The Azure services platform was announced at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles by Ray Ozzie, Microsoft’s Chief Software Architect.
The main aim of Windows Azure is to help developers build the next generation of applications that will span from the cloud to the enterprise data-centre and deliver compelling new experiences across the PC, Web and phone.
It will give users greater freedom and flexibility as data will not be stored on their individual computers and will therefore be able to be accessed from any device.
Azure represents Microsoft’s move into the booming online software territory currently dominated by key players such as Amazon and Google.
The new Azure platform will be made available alongside the next Windows release, Windows 7.
Ozzie said: “Today (27 October) marks a turning point for Microsoft and development community.”
“The Azure Services Platform, built from the ground up to be consistent with Microsoft’s commitment to openness and interoperability, promises to transform the way businesses operate and how consumers access their information and experience the Web.”
