O2, Plusnet and Sky are heading uSwitch.com’s best broadband provider league. O2, Plusnet and Sky are heading uSwitch.com’s best broadband provider league.

Mobile phone giant O2 has held the top spot of the Broadband Customer Satisfaction report, commissioned by uSwitch.com, for the second year in a row with rival Orange slipping to the bottom of the league.

The UK’s largest independent Broadband Customer Satisfaction survey found that while customers spend almost £3 billion a year on their broadband, just six out of ten are generally satisfied with the customer service they receive.

The broadband market is huge and new entrants appear almost daily to vie for customers. However, it is some of the biggest names which are holding the bottom spots in overall satisfaction. AOL, Orange and BT have fared poorly in the survey, with less than half of Orange’s one million customers saying they would recommend its broadband to a friend.

Meanwhile, O2 has retained its position at the top of the table for the second year running, despite entering the market just three years ago. Plusnet – an independent subsidiary of BT is one of the relative ‘newcomers’ to the market but has already established its position at the top end of the table and won a joint award with O2 for Best Technical Support.

Matthew Wheeler, Communications expert at uSwitch.com, said: “This is not rocket science. The continued success of O2 shows that an excellent service does not have to cost the earth.

“Its broadband service is one of the cheapest on the market but its customers are head and shoulders above its rivals. Plus, O2’s customers can enjoy broadband for less than half the price of BT if they sign up to a mobile deal, demonstrating the added value that’s possible by being with the same provider for more than one service.”

The good news for all broadband customers is that the average annual bill has dropped to £167, down from £175 in 2009; and the average speed has jumped from 4.2MB to 5.7MB.
