Postal Strike: Update

2:54pm GMT, Monday, 20 July 2009

Postal workers continue to take strike action to get their message heard. Postal workers continue to take strike action to get their message heard.

The Royal Mail has today (20 July) confirmed that it has been told by the Communication Workers Union (CWU) further strike action is set to take place on 21 July 2009, disrupting further postal services.

This bout of industrial action will affect the Ipswich Mail Centre.

In the statement Royal Mail released today, it said: “Royal Mail is disappointed the CWU is taking further industrial action when we have been delivering record quality of service for our customers.

“Royal Mail will continue to talk with the CWU and our people underlining the impact of any disruption on customers and Royal Mail’s business and reputation in these challenging economic times.”

This latest announcement follows several days of action at the end of June and early July, and more recently postal strikes affected various parts of the country during a 24-hour strike on 17 July.

Commenting on the most recent day of action, Dave Ward, CWU General Secretary, said: “There are serious and growing problems in the postal sector which urgently need resolving.

“The current cuts, bullying managers and ever-increasing workloads on a shrinking workforce cannot continue.”

According to BBC online, the strike action is set to escalate, with three days of walkouts on 25, 27, 28 July, with Royal Mail’s London distribution centre set to be affected on the latter two days.

Newsflash to Royal mail

we are in the middle of a recession - now is not the time to be worrying about pay rises. you are kicking the little man when hes already down and not the people you are aiming this at. I want my bloody mail now get up off your work shy ass and get delivering - I have no sympathy for you

Kayleigh Says:

These people are so lucky to have a job right now! Nearly all my family have no job! And they are complaining about pay!!!! GET A GRIP!! And get posting my bloody dress! It’s a birthday present and guess what, it’s nearly my birthday!!!!!!!!

HS Says:

o my god!!! how long will this strike go on? i am waiting for a really important letter from university so i can go back home and see my family who i havent seen in over a year!! but till i get the damn letter i cant go back!!! do these lot think they are the only one with issues? get real people!!!!!

john a stapleford Says:

Give their jobs to those that are willing to work.

Jeremy Ireland Says:

These postal workers get a far better deal than most employees including me and they sure as hell don’t work a longer or harder day than the rest of us for it. I have no sympathy for them at all. The postal service ought to be in the control of the government with no right whatsoever to take strike action. In the U.S. certain industries are prevented from strike action and things seem to work fine over there. The UK postal system boasts itself time and again but truth is, it sucks and seems to be getting worse every year. What we need in Britain are politicians with balls and some integrity to sort things like this out. If postal workers don’t want to work they ought to be tossed out on their asses. There are thousands of unemployed people just waiting to take their places who will work under the already more than reasonable conditions they have.

amelia Says:

I have a small business run from home & this has caused my untold stress with angry customers complaining about things not arriving. I have had to make refunds because of this & still things are caught up in the system. It will be the final blow for many small struggling businesses if this continues. No sympathy here!

TonyM Says:

I HAVE BEEN MADE REDUNDANT 3 TIMES IN THE LAST 10 YEARS AND IT IS NO JOKE. I FEEL FOR THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE LOST THEIR JOBS THIS YEAR.

THE POSTAL WORKERS SHOULD THINK THEMSELVES LUCKY THEY HAVE A JOB - WHILE THERE ARE THOUSANDS THAT WISH THEY HAD A JOB BEFORE CHRISTMAS TAKES IT’S TOLL ON THEIR FINANCES.

COME ON NOW POSTIES - LIVE IN THE REAL WORLD FOR ONCE

NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO STRIKE - YOU WILL MAKE SO MANY ENEMIES

NO CHRISTMAS BOX FOR YOU THIS YEAR!
