Debenhams and Marks & Spencer confirm pre-Christmas sales

12:25pm GMT, Wednesday, 3 December 2008

Both Debenhams and Marks & Spencer are holding cut-price events during December. Both Debenhams and Marks & Spencer are holding cut-price events during December.

High street retailer Debenhams has begun another three-day sale today (3 December), with savings of up to 20% being offered across its network of stores.

The event follows the success of Debenhams’ price-cutting campaign held on 17 November which saw footfall increase by two thirds as customers queued to enter many of its outlets.

Reductions will be offered on almost everything in-store and online, including womenswear, menswear and kids’ clothing; cosmetics and fragrance; Christmas gifting; homewares and accessories.

Debenhams’ Deputy Chief Executive, Michael Sharp, said: “We’re back by popular demand – it’s as simple as that, we’re delivering fantastic designer value at a
time when customers tell us they want it; after all that’s our job.”

After the success of its one-day sale also held in November, Marks & Spencer is to go head to head with Debenhams on Thursday (4 December) with a ‘One Day Christmas Spectacular’.

M&S will cut 20% off all clothing, homeware and wine – both in-store and online; whilst 20% will also be slashed off the price of Christmas cakes and puddings.

M&S Chairman, Stuart Rose, added: “Our last One Day Christmas Spectacular went down really well with customers. We know that people are feeling the pinch and we want to give them a helping hand in the run up to Christmas.”

To cope with demand from bargain-hunters, M&S is extending its opening hours during the event. Its Culverhouse Cross, Cardiff store will be open until 1am whilst many outlets will not close until Midnight. Shoppers will also be able to take advantage of longer opening hours at Debenhams.
