Tourism chiefs in Glasgow have set themselves ambitious targets for the city in preparation for welcoming millions of new people to the city ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

‘Glasgow: Service with Style’ is a new campaign launched by Glasgow’s tourism chiefs with the aim of raising standards and visitor experience and in turn helping to grow the city’s tourism sector by 60% by 2016.

Scott Taylor, Chairman of the Glasgow Tourism Strategy steering group and Chief Executive of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: “The launch celebrates the city’s capital commitment to the investment in and development of the most important element – people – to create world-class customer service.”

More than 2.8 million people visit Scotland’s largest city every year with its buildings and architecture steeped in history and culture – it is notable for numerous designs by Charles Rennie Mackintosh – and its trendy retail and entertainment scene.

An estimated 40,000 new jobs look set to be created over the next six years as Glasgow encourages business growth in the tourism sector.

With Glasgow playing host to Scotland’s largest multi-sport event to ever be held in Scotland – the 2014 Commonwealth Games – tourism bosses will also be hoping to draw a new type of visitor to the City.

“In a few years, we’ll be hosting thousands of visitors for the Commonwealth Games. This is a unique opportunity to showcase Glasgow and all it has to offer. Glasgow: Service with Style is the first innovative project of its kind that brings together the city’s tourism businesses for the same goal - making sure those coming here have a fantastic experience, spread the word and return,” Mr Taylor added.

Graeme Gibson, Chair of the ‘Glasgow: Service with Style’ project and General Manager of the Radisson Blu hotel, said: “Tourism is key to Glasgow’s economy with tens of thousands of people employed in the industry and millions of visitors each year, so it’s crucial that we do all that we can to maintain our reputation for being one of the UK’s top visitor destinations.”

Stephen Carter, Managing Director of Cameron House on Loch Lomond, commented:  “Motivated, happy and well trained staff are at the very heart of all successful businesses. I know that by investing in their development my business will continue to grow and more importantly my guests will be happy.”
