Computer game Grand Theft Auto IV has broken all-time entertainment records for day one and week sales according to its publisher Take-Two Interactive Software.

Released on 29 April worldwide, the critically acclaimed  Grand Theft Auto IV has sold approximately 6 million units globally with an estimated retail value of more than $500m (£256m) in the first week.

On its opening day, approximately 3.6m units were sold, with a retail value of approximately $310m globally.

The New York Times reported that the game “sets a new standard for what is possible in interactive arts”.

Strauss Zelnick, Chairman of Take-Two, said: “We knew Grand Theft Auto IV would break new ground in terms of the player’s experience, with its compelling story line, extraordinary gameplay and action that ranges over a broad urban canvas.

“Now, it has broken sales and rating records as well. Grand Theft Auto IV’s first week performance represents the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment, and we believe these retail sales levels surpass any movie or music launch to date.”

Developed by series creator Rockstar North, and set in Liberty City, the latest installment in the successful Grand Theft Auto series features a painstakingly detailed and lifelike city for players to explore; a rich, immersive narrative experience; an original soundtrack highlighting the cultural eclecticism of Liberty City; and 16 player multiplayer with more than a dozen online modes.

Developed for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, it is rated ‘M’ for Mature in the US and an ‘18’ in the UK.
