John Lewis reports record day’s trading.
British retailer John Lewis has experienced an increase in sales in its first post-Christmas weekend – up 7% from last year.
Britain’s largest department store chain has announced a record day’s trade (Saturday 27 December) with the start of its clearance sales, earning a total of £21.3 million in weekend takings.
Particularly strong sales in home technology, womenswear and household items helped John Lewis achieve the record figures.
Andy Street, Managing Director of John Lewis, said: “This is a remarkable result at any time and particularly so in this challenging economic climate.
“John Lewis customers are being judicious in their purchasing and recognise the outstanding quality and value of the products we have to offer, particularly in our home assortments as well as in audio visual and fashions.”
The news gives renewed hope for the retail industry following a month that has seen the downfall of Woolworths, Zavvi, Whittard and Adams.
