Online travel industry in decline
The top 100 e-retailers have been revealed by Hitwise UK.
New statistics have shown that the UK’s online travel industry is in decline, as travel companies slide down Hitwise UK’s Top 100 e-retailers list.
Experian-owned website research company Hitwise compiled the annual list using the number of visits each website received. Of the results, Thomson Holidays was the only travel company to see an increase, while British Airways saw the most dramatic decrease in traffic numbers, falling from 19 to 43 in the Top 100.
Expedia was ranked 8th in the list, with easyJet, Ryanair and Thomson Holidays ranking 11th, 12th and 13th. However, all travel companies, aside from Thomson, had lost ground in the listings since 2006.
Out of the overall top 100 sites, clothing proved to be the fastest-growing online shopping sector, while Amazon remained at the number one spot – and has so since the list was first published in 2006.
Robin Goad, Hitwise’s Director of Research, said: “Perhaps the most surprising thing is how stable the top 50 has been. 33 of the retailers in this quarter’s top 50 appeared in the list three years ago, nicely illustrating the staying power of top brands. It is also interesting to note that of the 17 companies that weren’t on the list in May 2006 but are now, the majority are established high street names.
“However, while consumers do look for trusted brands when shopping online, they also look for innovative products, competitive prices and great customer service – and all of these contribute to a retailer’s online reputation. That is why online remains the most exciting channel for retailers both old and new.”
The top 10 e-retailers identified on the list are, in order: Amazon UK, Argos, Play.com, Amazon.com, Tesco.com, Marks & Spencer, Epson UK, Expedia.com, Next and ASOS.
