iPhone users and iPod touch will be able to make free internet calls as the Skype application becomes available to download from the Apple App Store.

The Skype application for iPhones and iPod touches, which will be free to download, was launched today (31 March) after months of anticipation.

Founded in 2003, Skype has been used predominately on desktop computers. The ebay-owned internet telephone service has more than 405 million registered users and is used in almost every country in the world.

The service is free to use for internet calls, video calls and instant messaging. Users can buy credits to use Skype to make a call to a landline or mobile telephone.

As with Skype on computers, phone calls between Skype users will be free on the iPhone through a Wi-Fi connection. Calls made through Skype to landlines or mobiles will be at a low cost.

The Skype application will work on the Apple devices much like it works on computers already. The application will have to be running to receive or make a call. It will work in the background like it does on desktop computers.

It will also be available for download on any second generation iPod touch with a compatible headset and microphone.

Scott Durchslag, Skype’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “Skype software for the iPhone has been the number one request among our users. We are delighted to deliver on this request and put Skype into the pockets of millions of people around the world who are carrying iPhone and iPod touch devices.”

To download the Skype application, visit: www.itunes.com/appstore/.
