Sony recalls 440,000 VAIO laptops
Sony recalls VAIO TZ series laptops.
Sony is recalling 440,000 VAIO laptops across the world after faulty wiring leaves seven with minor burns.
The recall involves 19 VAIO models in the TZ series that were manufactured by the consumer electronics company between May 2007 and July 2008.
Wiring faults that can lead to overheating are the cause of the worldwide recall, state Sony. Five people in Japan have suffered minor burns along with reported cases in both the US and Italy.
According to Sony, 373,000 of the VAIO notebook PC models were sold worldwide in approximately 48 countries, with 67,000 of the devices sold in Japan. The recall, that does not include laptops sold in the UK, could have a significant impact on the company’s profits.
In 2006, several major laptop manufacturers were forced to recall almost 10 million Sony batteries because of potential overheating, costing Sony about $430 million (£243m).
Owners of VAIO laptops in the specified range are urged to contact Sony, either through their website or by free-phone, to organise a free voluntary inspection and reworking.
A spokesman for Sony said: “We take the quality of the products we sell very seriously and make every effort to ensure that the products we develop meet all the relevant regulations and standards. We sincerely apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.”
