Digital music streaming service Spotify has been launched as a downloadable application on mobile phones and Apple iPhones.

Spotify is now available for download on Google’s Android-powered mobile phones and in the Apple App store for iPhones and iPod touches.

The Spotify music app will allow users access to the firm’s four million songs and stream them directly to their phones. Users will also be able to save more than 3,000 songs to play while offline.

Mobile users hoping to use the app will however be subject to a subscription fee of £10, despite the service being free online.

It will be available to subscribers in the UK, Sweden, Spain, France, Norway and Finland.

Spotify submitted the app for iPhones back in July and was approved by the end of August. Its approval surprised some commentators as the Swedish streaming service could be a real rival to Apple’s iTunes store.

The digital music service’s expansion into mobile applications is a way of generating more revenue for the firm that currently only has one paying subscriber out of 50.

Spotify was launched in 2008 and has more than two million users in the UK, and over six million across Europe.
