Ryanair terminates Boeing talks

3:45pm GMT, Friday, 18 December 2009

Ryanair has called off negotiations with Boeing over the purchase of up to 200 new aircraft. Ryanair has called off negotiations with Boeing over the purchase of up to 200 new aircraft.

Budget airline Ryanair has confirmed that it has pulled out of negotiations with Boeing over an order of up to 200 new aircraft.

On its website, Ryanair stated that talks with Boeing about the purchase of the aircraft to be delivered in the period between 2013 and 2016 had been terminated unsuccessfully.

Ryanair will not seek to buy the aircraft from another manufacturer nor will it reopen negotiations with Boeing.

The budget airline has said it will still take delivery of 112 Boeing aircraft between 2010 and 2012, which it had previously agreed and which will help cope with Ryanair’s growing traffic numbers over the medium term.

Michael O’Leary, Ryanair CEO, said: “We regret that our prolonged negotiations with Boeing have failed to reach a mutually acceptable conclusion.”

Mr O’Leary stated that a price had been agreed on by both companies, but Boeing had been unwilling to include some other terms and conditions into the agreement.

The collapse of the negotiations means that there will be a cash surplus between 2012 and 2015, which Ryanair has said will be returned to shareholders.

Ryanair will now focus its efforts on maintaining its strong traffic and adding more routes to its existing flight plan in 2010.

Mr O’Leary added: “In the meantime we will continue to work with our partners in Boeing on the 48 deliveries which Ryanair is scheduled to take in 2010 and perhaps in future there may be other opportunities for Ryanair and Boeing to work together to our mutual benefit during the period from 2013 onwards.”
