Budget airline SkyEurope has collapsed, leaving some passengers stranded and unable to claim refunds.

Budget airline SkyEurope filed for bankruptcy yesterday (1 September) and suspended all operations and sales with immediate effect, leaving some passengers stranded at airports.

Some rival airlines have offered stranded customers “rescue” offers to help them reach their intended destinations.

SkyEurope operated flights to Prague and Slovakia out of Luton and Manchester airports.

Customers who paid more than £100 for flights with a credit card will be able to get a refund through the card company.

However, any purchases made directly to the Slovakian-based air firm by any means other than credit card may not be able to claim the money back.

SkyEurope flights booked as part of a holiday package will be protected by Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing (ATOL).

In a brief statement published on SkyEurope’s website, the airline said it regretted any inconvenience caused by the firm’s collapse.

The Travel Association (ABTA) has commented that the collapse of SkyEurope highlights certain gaps in the holiday financial situation, with some customers stranded and out of pocket.

Mark Tanzer, ABTA Chief Executive, said: “This airline failure in a tough economic climate, along with several others last year, highlights the need for urgent action by the Government and EU to plug this gaping hole in customer financial protection.”
