Twitter acquires GeoAPI creator Mixer Labs
Twitter has acquired Mixed Labs – creators of the location tracking application, GeoAPI.
Popular micro-blogging website Twitter has bought start-up company Mixer Labs, which created the GeoAPI application for the website which can track users’ locations across the world.
Mixed Labs was founded by two former Google employees and created the GeoAPI application for Twitter, which geographically tracks users and allows them to automatically upload their current location when they post a tweet.
On the Twitter blog, the website said: “When current location is added to tweets, new and valuable services emerge – everything from breaking news to finding friends or local businesses can be dramatically enhanced.
“We want to know what’s happening, and more precisely, where is it happening? As a dramatic example, twittering “Earthquake!” alone is not informative as “Earthquake!” coupled with your current location.”
Mixed Labs recently launched GeoAPI.com to help fellow developers create geo-enabled applications, which already include Birdfeed, Seesmic Web, Twidroid and Gowalla.
Twitter added: “We look forward to building features together that will make Twitter even more interesting and relevant to your daily life, no matter where you are.”
Twitter is a popular social networking site with over 58 million users worldwide. Users post messages of no more than 140 characters, as well as uploading photos and links.
