Biggest biomass plant in Britain

10:31am GMT, Thursday, 22 November 2007

Britain will soon be home to the world’s biggest biomass plant.

Britain is to build the world’s biggest biomass plant, the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) has announced.

At a cost of £400 million, the 350MW wood-chipped fuelled electricity generating plant will be built in Port Talbot, Wales, using wood fuel from sustainable American and Canadian sources.

This will generate enough electricity to power half the homes in Wales, providing electricity all day, every day, for 25 years – the plant’s expected lifetime.

The plant is being developed by Prenergy, and will be completed by 2010.
