Floating natural gas terminal planned
The natural gas receiving terminal will be located out of sight of the mainland.
Exxon Mobil Corporation has announced plans for a US$1 billion (around £250 million) project, BlueOcean Energy – a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving terminal designed to serve the homes of New York and New Jersey.
The terminal will supply more than five million customers with clean-burning natural gas, producing 1.2 billion cubic feet of the gas every day.
LNG ships will provide the terminal with gas, which will be stored inside insulated tanks, warmed, and then delivered to New Jersey and New York via a subsea pipeline.
Ron P. Billings, Vice President, Global LNG, ExxonMobil Gas & Power Marketing Company, said: “We believe that BlueOcean Energy is a unique and innovative solution to meeting the region’s energy challenges. BlueOcean Energy will provide significant economic benefits to New Jersey and New York and will help the region achieve its environmental objectives.”
According to the company, the terminal will not be seen from land. It will be moored in about 150 feet of water approximately 20 miles off the New Jersey shore and 30 miles from the coast of Long Island, away from shipping lanes.
The use of clean-burning natural gas can help to reduce emissions and improve air quality, and the BlueOcean Energy project will support New Jersey’s Energy Master Plan to meet its clean energy objectives.
BlueOcean Energy is currently consulting with the public, state and federal agencies. More information about the project can be found at www.blueoceanenergy.com.
