Vestas granted eviction order

Vestas has won a possession order on the fifteenth day that a number of its workers have staged a sit-in at Vestas Wind Systems plant on the Isle of Wight.

A second wind turbine factory has also been overtaken by workers, five of whom have climbed the roof of the Venture Quays building in Cowes. On Monday, a group of protesters staged a different form of protest and glued themselves together in an attempt to prevent people entering the offices of the UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change in London.

The employees have been protesting about forthcoming job losses – totalling more than 600 – and plant closures. They are calling for the company to be nationalised, or for a better redundancy package to support them when looking for new work.

Today, Vestas won a repossession order to evict the protesters after its bid last week to remove the workers failed because the court ruled that the papers had not been served ‘in accordance with legal moves’.

Bob Crow, General Secretary of the Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union, was in court. He has throughout been a harsh critic of the actions of Vestas. Outside court he said: “The court has made its decision but we will continue with our campaign and the right to work on green energy jobs.”

A message on the Save Vestas campaign website simply stated: “We will not be defeated so soon, comrades.”
