The Airbus A380’s interior is designed with comfort and luxury in mind.

Singapore Airlines’ double-decker superjumbo, the Airbus A380, made its inaugural commercial flight today.

The world’s largest commercial passenger jet departed Singapore’s Changi International Airport for Sydney at approximately 8:15am local time, with 455 passengers on board.

Singapore Airlines’ Chief Executive Chew Choon Seng, was on hand to personally welcome passengers as they boarded the flight, and described it as: “A new milestone in the timeline of aviation.”

The majority of those on board flight SQ380 bought their seats in an eBay charity auction, raising around $1.3 million (£650,000) for selected Singaporean and Australian charities. Passengers were treated to champagne in all three classes and were given commemorative certificates and limited-edition goody bags in recognition of their contribution to the occasion.

Designed for comfort

Speaking to French newspaper Le Monde, passenger Philippe Ledrans who had travelled from France for the event, described himself as speechless at just how quiet the A380’s cabin was, even during take-off and landing. “It went incredibly well and the aircraft is very comfortable and great for passengers,” he said, adding that the atmosphere on board was very friendly, with everyone enjoying the shared sense of occasion.

The jet is designed to offer greater comfort than any other large aircraft. In particular, its 12 ‘beyond first class’ cabins offer the epitome in luxury, where – behind sliding doors – passengers can recline in a private cabin offering a double bed made up with Givenchy duvets and cushions. Behind the suites, there are 399 comfortable economy seats and 60 business class seats measuring in at 87cm wide –the largest of their kind in a commercial jet.

Scheduled Singapore Airlines’ services with the A380 between Singapore and Sydney [began / will begin] on 28 October. Emirates and Qantas are among the other carriers that have placed orders for the plane.
