Friends of the Earth and Eurostar call for tough climate change laws
Almost three quarters of UK residents think rail travel is the greenest
Environmental charity Friends of the Earth has this week partnered with high-speed train operator Eurostar, to promote low-carbon travel solutions and urge the UK Government to strengthen its proposed laws on climate change.
The collaboration coincides with the publication of a YouGov poll of over 2,000 adults which reveals that 73% of the UK population think that rail is the greenest form of travel for journeys to mainland Europe and longer distance journeys in Britain.
The partnership was launched at Waterloo International station by Friends of the Earth Director, Tony Juniper and Eurostar Chief Executive, Richard Brown this week. Each of the organisations believe that the UK Government’s current plans for climate change do not go far enough.
They are calling for the new law to commit the UK to cutting its carbon dioxide emissions by at least 3% every year. They also want it to include the UK’s share of emissions from international aviation and shipping.
The campaign for a new climate change law is being led by Friends of the Earth through The Big Ask campaign. Further information can be read online at www.thebigask.com.
