6:01pm GMT, Tuesday, 18 March 2008

Heathrow Airport is the first to welcome Singapore Airline’s A380 ‘superjumbo’.

London’s Heathrow is the first European airport to welcome the continent’s inaugural commercial flight of Singapore Airline’s A380 – flying today, 18 March, from Singapore’s Changi Airport.

The A380 – the world’s largest passenger aircraft – carried 449 passengers and landed at Heathrow mid-afternoon.

Singapore Airlines is currently the only airline to operate the ‘super-jumbo’, offering daily flights between Sydney and Singapore, with daily services between Singapore and Tokyo commencing 20 May. Daily flights to and from London will operate following the inaugural flight.

Mr Huang Cheng Eng, Singapore Airlines Executive Vice President Marketing and the Regions, said of the flight’s popularity: “The strong demand we are witnessing highlights the superiority of the Singapore Airlines A380 product, and we are extremely heartened that customers all over the world are relishing the opportunity to experience comfort and luxury when they fly with us.”

The first European airport to welcome the A380, Heathrow has also recently celebrated the opening of Terminal 5 by Her Majesty the Queen on 14 March. The terminal, which will officially open to the public on 27 March, cost £4.3 billion to construct and will welcome around 30 million passengers a year.
