A new report has concluded that much of climate change is caused by human activity.

Man-made greenhouse emissions are likely to be the main cause of climate change, says a report by the UK’s Met Office.

The review concluded that environmental changes were occurring because of human activity. The changes cited include: temperature increases; warming oceans; changes in rainfall; and humidity.

According to the study, the earth’s temperature has increased 0.75°c over the last century, with the last decade (2000-2009) described as the warmest on record – and human influence over this temperature increase has been detected on every continent.

In addition, the amount of sea-ice has been declining – at a rate of 600,000km2 per decade – which can “only be explained by human influence”, the report stated.

Peter Stott, Head of Climate Monitoring and Attribution, said: “The science reveals a consistent picture of global change that clearly bears the fingerprint of man-made greenhouse gas emissions.

“This shows the evidence of climate change has gone beyond temperature increases — it is now visible across our climate system and all regions of the planet. Our climate is changing now and it’s very likely human activity is to blame.”

According to international environment organisation Greenpeace, 150,000 people die every year as a result of climate change.

It believes that the solutions to climate change include: the use of clean fuel – two thirds of energy going into power stations is lost as waste heat; using vehicles with reduced emissions; stopping airport expansions; reducing industrial emissions; and reducing domestic waste, such as turning off electrical appliances left on standby.
