Royal Caribbean ‘Godmother’ hunt
Royal Caribbean has launched a search for a Godmother for its newest ship.
Royal Caribbean International has launched a hunt for a ‘Godmother’ to reign over its largest cruise ship, Independence of the Seas – an accolade usually only reserved for celebrities or royalty.
The global cruise brand is searching for an “ordinary British woman who has done extraordinary things” and who must demonstrate how she has helped under-18s in her local community.
In return, the ‘Godmother’ will receive a formal portrait of herself displayed on the ship, a role in the naming ceremony, a VIP experience on the ship’s inaugural voyage, plus ten-years’ worth of Royal Caribbean cruising for two.
Adam Goldstein, CEO and President of Royal Caribbean International, explained the importance of the competition to the family-orientated ship: “We wanted to create an extra-ordinary inaugural celebration to showcase our commitment to the UK market. Our search for a British Godmother who demonstrates an extraordinary passion for young people is just that.”
The search was launched Monday 24 April in conjunction with the UK’s largest commercial TV station, ITV, and is fronted by Sir Steve Redgrave, five-time Olympic gold medallist. Sir Steve commented: “This a very special ship and therefore this is an amazing accolade for anyone to receive, but the opportunity to increase awareness of the fantastic work with young people that is done by hundreds of individuals around the country is a very worthy campaign, which I am delighted to support.”
Nominations can be made by visiting www.searchforagodmother.co.uk, with a closing date of 6 April. A panel of judges will decide who should become ‘Godmother’, and will announce their decision in time for the launch of Independence of the Seas in Southampton in April.
The cruise liner’s latest ship weighs in at 160,000 GRT and features an ice rink, climbing wall and FlowRider surf simulator. Previous Royal Caribbean Godmothers have included Whoopi Goldberg and Gloria Estefan.
