Motoring ahead in 2008
The UK has experienced a record year for car production.
Recent figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have revealed that the UK experienced its busiest vehicle output year ever in 2007, producing both a record number of cars for export and its highest number of commercial vehicles since 1998.
According to the Society, UK manufacturers produce an average of 1.5 million cars and three million engines every year.
Paul Everitt, Chief Executive of SMMT, stated the latest manufacturing figures reinforced the country’s strength as a global manufacturing base. He commented: “December recorded the sixth consecutive month of growth in car production. The final quarter also saw the strongest increase in output since 1985, up 21.7%. We ended the year up 92,482 units, with record levels being sent for export.”
The forecast for car and commercial vehicle production and export in 2008 is anticipated to be ‘stable’.
