February car sales rise ahead of scrappage end

Car sales rose 26.4% in February compared to the same time last year according to the SMMT, with a boost of nearly 20% from the government scrappage scheme.


The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said that the number of new car registrations was up 57.6% compared to November 2008.


According to the latest figures, the UK car output rate fell by 6.7% in October compared with the same month last year – the smallest annual decline of the year.


The government-backed scrappage scheme has seen new car sales rise by 31.6% in October – the biggest increase this year.


According to the SMMT, sales of new cars rose by 11.4% in September compared with the same month last year.
