GoDaddy domain registration proves troubleso.ME

11:30am GMT, Friday, 18 July 2008

According to reports on Twitter.com, many people tried to register the domain ‘aweso.ME’. According to reports on Twitter.com, many people tried to register the domain ‘aweso.ME’.

A number of internet users who rushed to secure a .ME domain name registration through GoDaddy.com yesterday, 17 July, have been left disappointed and temporarily out of pocket.

A huge number of people were expected to log on yesterday at 4pm to register their own personal .ME web address during Open Registration, however many who registered through GoDaddy.com – one of the world’s largest domain registrars – were left disappointed when their order was confirmed, only to be followed by an email reporting an error in the process.

Twitter, a social networking and micro-blogging site, has been inundated with users reporting problems registering through GoDaddy.com, while some posted reports of multiple users claiming to have received confirmation for the same site name.

Mashable, a social networking news site that has reported on the issue, has published a response from GoDaddy.com in relation to the problems: “We knew the .ME Open Registration response would be tremendous, but it went beyond even what we had expected. As a result, we experienced some system issues in our communication with the registry. As soon as we became aware of the issue we began taking steps to correct it. It is now resolved,” the company stated.

Users who have received an error message after their payment was processed have been told that their accounts will be credited accordingly within one business day.

GoDaddy.com was chosen by the government of Montenegro – where the catchy domain name .ME originated – as one of three members of a joint venture to operate the domain extension. Afilias, a leading registry services provider that also deals with .ORG and .INFO domains, and Me-Net were also part of the venture.

Trademark holders were able to register .ME domain names in May 2008, while Landrush – the term used to define the rush that occurs when a registry opens to registrations – began in June. From 4pm yesterday, Open Registration took place, which allowed members of the public to register a new domain that would immediately go live.
