Record your “Life in a Day” for YouTube - 24 July
YouTube users are invited to capture their lives on the 24 July for a new global documentary project.
Filmmakers Sir Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald are asking people worldwide to record their lives on the 24 July 2010 – to create a user-generated feature-length documentary.
“Life in a Day” is intended to be a historic cinematic experiment that will attempt to document one day, as seen through the eyes of people around the world.
On 24 July, people are invited to capture a snapshot of their lives on camera and submit it to the dedicated YouTube channel.
Kevin Macdonald, the Oscar-winning director of films such as The Last King of Scotland, Touching the Void and One Day in September, will then edit the most compelling footage into a feature documentary film, to be executive produced by Ridley Scott, the director behind films like Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Thelma & Louise, Blade Runner and Robin Hood.
“‘Life in a Day’ is a time capsule that will tell future generations what it was like to be alive on the 24th of July, 2010. It is a unique experiment in social filmmaking, and what better way to gather a limitless array of footage than to engage the world’s online community,” Macdonald said.
Macdonald, who brainstormed the concept for “Life in a Day” after meeting with Ridley Scott’s production company Scott Free, says the vagaries of the project are what he finds the most intriguing. “I’m excited by the lack of control,” he says. “I’m laying out the ground rules [for the project] as much as possible, but am just going to have to wait and see… Everything depends on how much people will contribute. I don’t know if I’m more afraid of getting too much content or too little.”
Scott Free will work with Rick Smolan, Creator of “A Day in the Life” and CEO of Against All Odds Productions – a California-based organisation that specialises in the execution of large-scale global projects – to distribute cameras to individuals in remote regions of the world in an effort to ensure that the film is as inclusive and representative as possible.
“I hope it will be something that will open people’s eyes to the possibilities of user-generated film,” Macdonald said. “Of course, it’s a risk. It could be that I won’t get anything interesting back. But I don’t think that will be the case. I’m sure there will be some real gems, some real magic, which is what I’m looking for.”
The film will premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and the creator of any footage that makes it into the final cut will be credited as a co-director and may be one of 20 contributors selected to attend the premiere.
LG Electronics is supporting “Life in a Day” as a key part of its long-standing Life’s Good campaign and to support the creation of quality online content that can be shared and enjoyed by all.
YouTube users aged 13 and above will be allowed to upload their videos for the project and have a week to submit their 24 July contributions.
